ARMTHORPE ST LEONARD & ST MARY
Welcome to St Leonard & St Mary Armthorpe. We are a small church but with a big heart. We hope your visit is a pleasant one and that you will take time to look around this marvellous building. But also time to sit and enjoy the quite prayerful atmosphere.
The church is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. A church of some kind has stood here on this site for over 1,000 years. It became a parish in 1175 and a full list of Rector’s can be found at the back of the church. The church was enlarged by having the north aisle added in 1885, along with other alterations.
We have a fine Romanesque arch leading into the chancel which has some Norman lattice work carved into it. There are also some fine stain-glass windows, including the Miners Memorial window in the north aisle, a modern window depicting the Markham Main colliery.
